A Dhaka court on Sunday placed former lawmaker and Lieutenant General (retd) Masud Uddin Chowdhury on a four-day remand in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over the alleged embezzlement of Tk119.32 crore through the recruitment of workers for Malaysia.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Faiz passed the order after hearing a remand petition filed by the ACC.
Bench Assistant Riaz Hossain confirmed the matter.
The investigation officer of the case, ACC Assistant Director Md Abul Kalam Azad, sought a seven-day remand for Masud Uddin, who was produced before the court.
ACC Public Prosecutor Mir Ahmed Ali Salam argued in favour of the remand, while defence lawyers opposed the plea and sought its rejection.
According to the ACC's application, Masud Uddin and others allegedly secured appointments as recruitment agents for Malaysian workers by abusing government influence and acting in collusion with one another.
Although the government had fixed the migration cost at Tk78,990 per worker, the accused allegedly collected additional money from workers. The ACC claims they unlawfully collected Tk119.32 crore at different stages of the recruitment process, causing financial losses to migrant workers.
The anti-graft body further alleged that the accused laundered the illegally obtained money through forgery, transfer, conversion and other means. The case includes charges under the Penal Code, the Money Laundering Prevention Act and the Anti-Corruption Commission Act.
The ACC told the court that Masud Uddin's remand was necessary for further investigation.
Earlier, on March 22, members of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch (DB) arrested Masud Uddin from his residence in Baridhara DOHS in the capital.
He was later shown arrested in the case and has since remained in custody in connection with multiple cases.
