Six newborn infants have died simultaneously inside a ward at Ad-din Medical College Hospital in the capital's Mogbazar area, prompting the mobilisation of specialised police units to investigate the incident.
The exact cause behind the sudden deaths remains unknown.
Teams from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) alongside regular police personnel have been deployed to the scene to uncover the reasons behind the tragedy.
The incident occurred in the early hours of today (27 May) inside the post-operative unit of the hospital, where the deceased infants, all aged between one and two days, were being kept, confirmed Sheikh Zahidul Islam, deputy commissioner (DC) of the Ramna Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
The police official stated that the ward is specifically dedicated to housing neonates aged one to two days.
He noted that the six infants died suddenly during the dawn hours, leading to the immediate dispatch of a CID team to investigate the ward and the circumstances.
Other police units remain stationed at the hospital area as the investigation continues.
