At least eight construction workers were killed and seven others injured in a tragic road accident in Sylhet while they were on their way to work.
The accident occurred around 6:25am on Sunday on the Sylhet-Dhaka highway in South Surma, when a worker-carrying pickup van collided head-on with an oncoming truck.
Police have identified four of the victims as Md. Suruj Ali (60), son of the late Kharom Ali from Bhatipara village in Dirai upazila of Sunamganj; Mosammat Munni (35), daughter of Abdul Basir from Sheshti village of the same upazila; Md. Badrul (30), son of Sujat Ali from Lalargaon under Jalalabad Police Station in Sylhet; and Md. Faridul (35), son of the late Nur Salam from Nurnagar area of Dirai upazila.
The identities of the remaining four victims have yet to be confirmed.
Deputy Commissioner (South) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police Md Riazul Kabir said a group of construction workers had set out from Sylhet early morning in a DI pickup van bound for Sunamganj. The collision occurred in the Tetli Bazar area of South Surma with a timber-laden truck coming from the opposite direction.
Four workers died on the spot, while the injured were taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where four more were later declared dead.
Several others remain critically injured and are receiving treatment at the hospital, according to doctors.
Both the pickup and truck drivers fled the scene after the accident. Police have launched a drive to identify and arrest them, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the crash.
