Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said on Wednesday that Bangladesh has sought a temporary waiver from the United States to buy Russian oil, aiming to safeguard the country’s energy security amid the global fuel crisis triggered by the Middle East conflict.
“The United States has already granted India a temporary waiver for purchasing Russian oil. Bangladesh is hoping to receive a similar opportunity,” the minister told reporters after a meeting with US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen at his Dhaka office.
Khasru said, “We have stated that if Bangladesh is given such an opportunity, it would be a significant support for our economy. They [the US] have said they will forward the matter to Washington. Let’s see what happens.”
The meeting also discussed the current state of the international energy market.
Khasru said that uncertainty has arisen in global oil and gas supply. In this context, ensuring energy security has become crucial for Bangladesh.
He also highlighted discussions on ways to enhance investment, trade, and economic cooperation between Bangladesh and the United States.
