BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday said no one would be able to derail the upcoming election, as people across the country have awakened and are determined to exercise their voting rights.
“Journalists work for the country and its people by speaking and writing the truth,” he said, adding that some quarters always try to foil and sabotage elections. “But this time no one can stop the election. The people of this country have risen. The vote we will cast cannot be prevented.”
Mirza Fakhrul made the remarks at a roadside rally held on Sunday morning (1 February) in the Kazipara area of Mohammadpur Union under Sadar upazila of the Thakurgaon-1 constituency.
Addressing party leaders, activists and local residents, he urged voters to safeguard polling centres on election day so that no one could create unrest. “Hindus and Muslims must ensure that everyone can vote peacefully. Be vigilant so that no one dares to engage in mischief,” he said.
He also called on supporters to take to the field on 12 February carrying banners bearing the symbol of the sheaf of paddy, associated with Shaheed Ziaur Rahman and Begum Khaleda Zia.
An emotional moment unfolded during the rally when the sister of Shaheed Mamun from Thakurgaon presented Mirza Fakhrul with a clay savings bank containing her savings, along with a few eggs from hens she had raised herself.
The gesture visibly moved the BNP secretary general. He struggled to hold back tears, becoming emotional in front of the crowd, an incident that deeply touched those present.
