At least four people were killed, and several were injured when two passenger launches collided in dense fog on the Meghna River in Chandpur early Friday.
The Dhaka-bound MV Zakir Samrat-3, which had departed from Ghosherhat in Bhola, was crossing the Haimchar area shortly after 2am when the Barishal-bound MV Adventure-9 struck it with force.
The collision occurred between Haimchar upazila and Harina area.
Dhaka district River Police Superintendent Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed the recovery of the bodies of three men and one woman.
Several injured passengers were rescued and taken to hospital, he added.
The deceased were identified as Abdul Gani, 38; Md Saju, 45; Md Hanif, 60; and Rina, 35.
The identities were confirmed by SP Mamun from Dhaka.
Following the accident, police in Jhalakathi seized MV Adventure-9 after it anchored at the Jhalakathi launch terminal this morning.
Four staff members were also taken into custody for interrogation.
Additional Superintendent of Police of Jhalakathi Sadar Circle SM Bayzid Ibne Akbar said the launch was handed over to the River Police for further legal steps.
Barishal River Police Superintendent Nazmul Haque confirmed the detention, adding that Chandpur River Police would take the next actions as the incident occurred there.
Mohammad Hasan, a passenger aboard Adventure-9, said the collision happened around 2:00am when the drivers of both vessels failed to see each other due to heavy fog.
