A court in Pabna sent a woman to jail today on charges of killing eight puppies in Ishwardi upazila.
The accused, Nishi Rahman, is the wife of an official of the Small Farmers Development Foundation (SFDF) office in the upazila.
Police said Nishi was arrested on Tuesday night from a residence in Ishwardi municipality area. Ishwardi Upazila Livestock Officer Aklima Khatun filed a case against her the same night under Section 7 of the Animal Welfare Act, 2019.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Ishwardi Circle) Pranab Kumar confirmed the case filing.
Nishi was produced before the Senior Judicial Magistrate Court-1 this afternoon. After a hearing, Magistrate Torikul Islam ordered to send her to jail, said Rafikul Islam, general recording officer (GRO) of Pabna court police.
She was accused of killing eight puppies on the premises of Ishwardi Upazila Parishad a few days earlier -- an incident that went viral on social media, drawing public outrage.
Following the incident, Nishi and her family vacated their government residence. Speaking to journalists, she denied killing the puppies, claiming she had only removed them for the safety of her children.
