Train movement on the Mymensingh–Netrakona–Bhairab route came to a halt on Tuesday morning after the locomotive of a commuter train caught fire near Bista Railway Station in Gouripur upazila of Mymensingh district.

According to Mymensingh Railway Police, the engine of the Jaria-bound 49 Balaka Commuter Train caught fire around 10:00 am, prompting authorities to suspend train operations on the route.

“Smoke was seen billowing from the locomotive, creating panic among passengers,” said Aktar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Mymensingh Railway Police Station.

The blaze was soon brought under control and no casualties were reported, the OC added.

He said efforts were underway to replace the damaged locomotive and restore train services on the affected route.

Train operations will resume once the replacement work is completed, Hossain said.
