An union-level BNP leader in Lalmonirhat, who is currently behind bars in a case filed over the attempted rape of an NGO worker, has been expelled from the party.
In a written notice issued last night, the Lalmonirhat district unit of BNP announced the expulsion of Golam Kibria Ripon, the president of the party's Bhelabari union unit under Aditmari upazila.
At the same time, Abdul Malek, the unit's senior vice-president, has been appointed acting president.
Confirming the decision, Jaynul Abedin Swapon, office secretary of the Lalmonirhat district BNP, said, "Ripon has been expelled for his involvement in activities that go against party discipline."
The expelled BNP leader is now in Lalmonirhat District Jail. On October 29, he appeared before the District and Sessions Judge's Court seeking bail in the attempted rape case. However, the court rejected his plea and sent him to jail.
According to the case statement, the complainant works, a NGO worker, developed a romantic relationship with a local youth. After a fallout in their relationship, she sought the intervention of Ripon to resolve the matter. Ripon reportedly assured her of justice and advised her to stay at the house of his associate, Chan Mia.
The case statement further alleged that on the night of August 3, Ripon and Chan Mia attempted to rape the woman. Following the incident, the NGO worker filed a written complaint with Aditmari Police Station, after which police investigated the matter and formally recorded the case against both accused.
Aditmari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ali Akbar said, "Our preliminary investigation found the allegations to be true. A charge sheet will be submitted to the court soon."
