National Citizens’ Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has said that his party will not form any alliance with political groups that oppose reform or carry historical responsibility for wrongdoing. He made the remarks on Tuesday (October 28) while addressing a press conference at Rajshahi Tourism Motel following interviews with divisional-level NCP candidates.
Responding to journalists’ questions, Nahid Islam stated, “We have not yet decided to join any political alliance. If we ever do, it will be based on principle. We must think carefully before aligning with those who oppose reform, stand against Bangladesh’s aspirations for independence and sovereignty, or have a record of moral and political liability. We are a new political force, and the people have high expectations of us. Therefore, we want to maintain our distinct identity.”
Speaking about the July Charter, he said, “We are waiting to sign the July Charter. Once implemented, a referendum will be held, and Dr. Muhammad Yunus will sign the directive. The President cannot sign it because it would contradict the existing constitution. If there is any note of dissent, we will not sign it.”
The NCP Convener further alleged that “fascist forces” and “foreign interests” are attempting to sabotage the upcoming election, while the Awami League and its allies are trying to regain political legitimacy under the guise of democracy. “The next election will not be held under the previous caretaker system; it will be conducted under the leadership of Dr. Yunus,” he said.
Addressing the denial of the NCP’s Shapla (water lily) electoral symbol, Nahid Islam said, “The Election Commission’s refusal to grant us the Shapla symbol is a deliberate attempt to obstruct our political activities. This reflects clear arbitrariness. If necessary, we will take to the streets to secure our political rights.”
Among others present at the press conference were Sarjis Alam, Chief Organizer (Northern Region); Nahida Sarwar Niva, Senior Joint Member Secretary; Abdul Hannan Masud, Senior Joint Chief Coordinator; Imran Imon, Divisional Organizational Secretary (Rajshahi); and Mobashwer Hossain Laltu, Chief Coordinator of Rajshahi Metropolitan Chapter.
