A night guard was killed as a freight train collided with a truck at Sagorika level crossing in Chattogram early today.
The movement of freight trains from Chatttogram to other parts of the country remains suspended following the accident till 9:30am when the report was filed.
The deceased was identified as Samsul Haque, 60, hailed from Kishoreganj, had been working there as a night guard.
Railway Police Control Room Operator in Chattogram, Abdul Kaium, confirmed the incident.
According to the railway control room, the Dhaka-bound freight train, carrying 31 containers from the Chattogram Goods Port Yard (CGPY), collided with the truck around 4:00am, causing the train's engine and a wagon to derail and overturn. The truck also toppled over.
The night guard suffered serious injuries during the accident and was taken to a nearby hospital where he died later.
Anisur Rahman, divisional transport officer of Chattogram Railway told that, "The line is used only for freight services, so passenger train operations across the country remain normal."
He said the Initial reports suggest that the truck was speeding when it drove onto the tracks.
"The truck, the train collided and completely damaged the crossing barrier," he said, adding that a four-member inquiry committee has been formed to investigate the incident and determine the cause.
A relief train has been dispatched to the site to recover the derailed engine and wagon, the railway official said.
