Frightening video captured the moment a volcano in the Philippines erupted over the weekend — spewing plumes of black smoke 7,000 feet into the sky.
The Taal Volcano, located south of Manila, experienced the spate of eruptions starting Saturday night — with the footage quickly going viral on social media.
In one shocking clip, black smoke flooded the sky as debris rained down.
Despite the alarming footage, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the eruptions were only minor, the Philippine News Agency reported.
“This is normal in Taal Volcano, especially when there is continuous degassing or release of volcanic gas,” agency Director Teresito Bacolcol said. “We had several instances in the past when there were short-lived eruptions in a day.”
