A man died and two others went missing after a boat capsized in the Padma river while heading for a cremation in Rajshahi's Godagari upazila this morning.

The deceased was identified as Jiten Mondol, 60, of Kathalbaria village. The missing are Dilip, 32, of Faradpur village, and Horen Saha, 65, of Dumuria village, said Maksudur Rahman, in-charge of Premtoli Police Investigation Centre.

The accident occurred around 10:00am in the Premtoli area.

Police said the body of 70-year-old Kanai Karmakar, who died earlier in the day, was being taken to the river for cremation.

After one trip, the boat returned to fetch more relatives. Around 20–25 people boarded the vessel and set off again, but it capsized mid-river. Most swam ashore, but three were missing.

Locals rescued Jiten and took him to Premtoli Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead. A fire service diving team, assisted by locals, is searching for the missing.
