Section 144 imposed in Khagrachhari amid protests over schoolgirl rape

The administration has imposed Section 144 in Khagrachhari for an indefinite period to prevent possible unrest during a dawn-to-dusk road blockade called by Jumma Chhatra-Janata.

The blockade was announced in protest against the rape of a schoolgirl in Singinala and demanding the arrest of all perpetrators.

In a press release issued on Saturday afternoon, Khagrachhari Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate ABM Iftekharul Islam Khondker said the restriction would remain in force from 2:00pm until further notice.

The notice stated that there was a risk of deterioration in law and order and possible harm to life and property. It also warned that legal action would be taken against those violating the order.

Meanwhile, the blockade enforced under the banner of Jumma Chhatra-Janata has brought life in the hill district to a standstill. Thousands of tourists remain stranded in Sajek. Supporters of the blockade have set fire to tyres and felled tree trunks at different points across the district, creating widespread disruption.

Earlier, on Tuesday night (23 September), a schoolgirl was allegedly gang-raped on her way home after private tuition. Family members rescued her in an unconscious state from a field around 11:00pm that night. Police later detained a 19-year-old youth named Shoyon Shil on charges of involvement in the incident.
