A mother, her daughter and another passenger were killed when a truck and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw collided head-on in Shantiganj upazila of Sunamganj on Friday morning.

The accident occurred around 7:15am in front of an old homestead at Shatrumardan Bagherkona village under Paschim Pagla union, on the Sylhet–Sunamganj regional highway.

Witnesses said a Sylhet-bound speeding truck collided with an oncoming auto-rickshaw, leaving two people dead on the spot.

The deceased were identified as Keshba Priya, 40, a resident of the Ukilpara residential area of Sunamganj town, and her daughter Prathama Chowdhury, a seventh-grade student of Satish Chandra Girls’ High School in Sunamganj. Another victim, Sajal Ghosh, 50, was from the Nabinagar area.

Keshba Priya’s family are originally from Nabipur village in Baniachang upazila of Habiganj but had been living in Ukilpara.

After the crash, Prathama was rushed to Shantiganj Upazila Health Complex with severe injuries, but doctors declared her dead shortly afterwards. Her father, Pronoy Das, said his wife and daughter had been travelling to visit relatives in Sylhet when tragedy struck.

Govinda Kumar Das, a family member, said the entire household had been devastated by the accident. The deaths of the mother and daughter have cast a pall of sorrow across the locality.

Shantiganj Police Station’s officer-in-charge, Abdul Ahad, confirmed the incident and said the truck driver fled the scene immediately after the collision. “We are working to trace the truck and its driver. Legal action will follow after a full investigation,” he added.

Local residents complained that frequent accidents occur on this highway due to reckless speeding and unregulated traffic movement. They urged the authorities to install speed breakers and strengthen surveillance to reduce further tragedies.
