Three firefighters and an official sustained burn injuries while trying to control a fire that broke out at a chemical godown in Tongi’s Sahara Market on Monday afternoon.

The injured were identified as Fire Service officer Jannatul Nayeem, and firefighters Md Shamim, Md Nurul Huda, and Md Joy Hasan.

Of them, officer Nayeem and firefighters Md Nurul Huda and Md Joy Hasan were admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery at around 5:10pm and 5:30pm, respectively.

Firefighter Md Shamim is on his way to the hospital.

Talha Bin Zashim, station officer at the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) headquarters media cell, said the fire erupted at a tin-shed chemical warehouse in the market around 3:30pm.

Upon receiving the information, seven firefighting units rushed to the scene and began efforts to bring the blaze under control.

The officials were injured during the operation, he said.

Tongi Fire Service Senior Station Officer Shahin Alam said the fire spread rapidly following an explosion of chemicals stored in the godown.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, he added.
