Protesters vandalised Bhanga Police Station and an Upazila Parishad (UP) office on Monday as they clashed with police when enforcing road blockades in protest against the recent constituency re-demarcation in Faridpur.
A chase and counter-chase started when police tried to prevent the protesters from resuming blockades on the Dhaka-Khulna Highway and Dhaka-Barishal Highway.
At one point, the agitators attacked the police station, UP office and Officers’ Club. A few police trying to resist them ultimately had to flee the scene. The protesters also prevented reporters from filming their demonstrations.
At 11am, thousands of locals and BNP activists enforced the blockades by burning tyres and falling trees, confirmed Bhanga Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Rokibuzzaman. As of 1pm, law enforcers were trying to contain the situation, the officer said.
Since dawn, law enforcers had managed to prevent the blockades, which were set to be enforced for the second consecutive day, extending sufferings for travelers.
On Sunday, Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowhury warned “none will be spared for causing sufferings to general people.” He gave the protesters until Saturday evening to lift the blockades.
On 4 September, the Election Commission issued the final gazette on new boundaries after settling potential disputes with major political parties. Yet, the grassroots leaders repeatedly demonstrated in at least three districts of the country, causing huge sufferings to people, while the central leaders passively distanced themselves from the movements.
