Two residential students of a women's madrasa have died under mysterious circumstances at Gomastapur upazila in Chapainawabganj district.
The incident occurred early Saturday at Shefali Begum Women's Hafezia Madrasa at Dobar More area of Radhanagar union in the upazila.
The deceased were identified as Tania, 12, daughter of Tariqul Islam, a resident of Lebudanga village and Jamila, 10, daughter of Saibur Rahman, a resident of Begpur village, both in the same union of the upazila.
According to police, the residential students of the madrasa were sleeping on Friday night. At around 1:00 AM, the two students fell ill. A madrasa teacher, Sahida Khatun, took them to the Gomastapur Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor pronounced them dead.
Later, police took the bodies to the police station.
Dr. Abdul Alim, the on-duty doctor at the hospital, said that one of the girl brought dead, while the other died shortly after being admitted to the hospital.
Gomastapur Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Wadud Alam said that due to the mysterious nature of the deaths, the bodies have been brought to the police station and will be sent to Chapainawabganj General Hospital soon for an autopsy.
An investigation into the incident is underway, he added.
