Twenty-one individuals were pushed into Bangladesh through Sherpur's Nakugaon border in Nalitabari upazila early today.
Lt Col Mahadi Hassan, commanding officer of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Battalion-39 in Mymensingh, said the group—five men, five women and 11 children—was sent back around 1:15am through the Hatipagar area.
They are believed to be Rohingya, according to the CO.
He said the families had initially taken refuge in the Ukhiya Balukhali camp in Cox's Bazar during the 2017 Rohingya influx but later crossed into India illegally.
They were detained in a raid by Indian police and handed over to the country's Border Security Force (BSF), who pushed them across the border into Bangladesh, the BGB officer said.
"Verification of their identity is ongoing, and further legal steps will follow," he added.
