Police have arrested at least 90 people in connection with the violence during the National Citizen Party (NCP) rally in Gopalganj on July 16.

67 of the arrests were made from Muksudpur upazila and 23 from Kashiani upazila of Gopalganj.

Md Abdul Based, assistant superintendent of police (ASP) (Muksudpur Circle), confirmed the arrests, saying the arrested were accused in several cases filed with Gopalganj Sadar Police Station over the July 16 clashes, as well as in a separate case filed in Kashiani for blocking the Dhaka-Khulna Highway by felling trees.

Gopalganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mir Md Sajedur Rahman told reporters that Inspector Ahmed Ali filed a case yesterday night, naming 75 individuals and accusing around 400 unnamed persons.

The case involves allegations of arson, vandalism, and attacks on police vehicles during the NCP rally.

In a separate case, Kashiani Sub-Inspector Alimul Huda Jony filed a complaint accusing 300-350 people, both named and unnamed, for obstructing the highway near Sampan Highway Restaurant by placing felled trees on the road, ASP Based added.

Speaking to this correspondent, at least four union parishad chairmen from Muksudpur confirmed that many residents had fled the area following the arrests.

Moniruzzaman Molla, chairman of Bashbaria Union, said he was uncertain about the exact number of people arrested from his union but confirmed that one of his UP members was among them.

He also said he had left the area fearing arrest.

At least five others were killed and dozens injured in daylong running battles in Gopalganj on Wednesday, after local Awami League men allegedly attacked leaders and activists of NCP and vandalised their rally venue.
