Four young people died of poisoning while trying to retrieve their mobile phones from a septic tank in Sreemangal, Moulvibazar.

The incident took place in the Harinchara tea garden of the upazila on Wednesday night. Another person was injured in the incident and was sent to Sylhet Osmani Hospital.

On Thursday (July 10, 2025) morning, Dr. Pranoy Kanti Das, superintendent of the 250-bed Sadar Hospital in Moulvibazar, said that one of them had fallen into the septic tank with his mobile phone.

Then, while trying to retrieve the mobile phone, four people got into the tank one by one and died of poisoning.

The deceased are Rana Nayak (17), Shravan Nayek (19), Krishna Ravidas (20) and Nipen Phulmali (27). All of them are children of tea workers from Sreemangal Harinchara tea garden. One of the injured in the incident, Ravi Bunarjee (20), was referred to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment after receiving emergency treatment.

On-duty doctor Dr. Sabyasachi Pal Tamal said, "First, four dead bodies came to our hospital at 1:45 am on Wednesday. After about an hour, an injured person came. The incident of four people dying one after another in a septic tank is unusual. It is not clear how so much toxic gas accumulated in a septic tank of one ring. Details will be known after the autopsy."

Meanwhile, Aminul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sreemangal Police Station, confirmed the incident. He heard about the incident around 1:30 am on Wednesday. Later, the police went to the Harinchara tea garden and inspected the scene.

Pankaj Kanda, vice-president of the Bangladesh Tea Workers Union, said that the death of four young people from Harinchhara Bagan is very tragic.

I heard that when someone's mobile phone fell into a septic tank, Rana, Shravan, Krishna, and Nipen fell into the tank one by one and fell ill while trying to retrieve it.

He further said that upon seeing this incident, a young man named Robi Bunarjee went down the septic tank to rescue the four people who had fallen ill, but he also fell ill. Finally, a young man named Justin came and quickly rescued Robi Bunarjee, but he could not rescue the four people. Later, Justin also fell ill.
