A 34-year-old Bangladeshi youth was shot dead by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) in Panchagarh's Ghagra border area early Sunday.
The incident took place near sub-pillar 751/3 under Haribhanga union, close to the India-Bangladesh frontier.
The deceased was identified as Raju Islam, son of Abdul Kuddus, a resident of Jhuli Para village in the border area.
According to locals, Raju along with several others, had approached the border area to allegedly bring cattle from India. During the attempt, members of the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) reportedly opened fire on them.
While the others managed to escape, Raju was struck in both legs and returned home injured. He died early Sunday while being taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
Being infromed, a team of police recovered the body and sent it to morgure for autopsy, said Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Md. Shoimi Imtiaz.
“There are clear signs of bullet wounds on both legs,” he said.
Local UP member Hasibul Islam criticized border security, stating, “We’ve repeatedly warned about unauthorized border crossings, but lax enforcement led to this tragedy.”
The incident has sparked tension in the border village, with residents demanding a thorough investigation and stricter monitoring of border activities.
