Three thousand people have been stranded as low-lying areas of the coast have been inundated by a 5-7 foot tidal surge at Monpura upazila in Bhola district on Thursday.
This surge, exacerbated by Cyclone 'Shakti', has caused the Meghna River's water level to rise above the danger mark.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Likhon Bonik reported that most areas of the isolated, unprotected islands of Char Kalatali and Char Nizam are also submerged.
He confirmed that the administration is providing dry food to the affected areas. Unfortunately, cattle and goats have died in Char Kalatali.
A panic situation has gripped the entire coast since Wednesday night due to continuous strong winds and heavy rainfall.
By Thursday afternoon at 3 PM, the rising tide in the Meghna had intensified, causing further inundation of low-lying areas and worsening the plight of the stranded residents.
Upon visiting the affected regions, it was observed that low-lying areas in Daserhat, Char Mariam, Sonarchar, and Char Jotin villages of Hazirhat Union are submerged.
Additionally, the launch ghat area, Andirerpar village, and Kauyar Tek area of Monpura Union No. 1 have also been inundated by 5-7 foot tidal waters, leaving thousands trapped.
Water Development Board (WDB) Division-2 Executive Engineer Ashfauddoula stated that the Meghna River's water level is flowing 60 centimetres above the danger mark, causing the low-lying areas to be flooded.
