Nineteen Bangladeshi nationals, including women and children, were pushed back from India through Sonapur Majhpara border in Meherpur's Mujibnagar upazila early today, police said.
After crossing the border, the group took shelter near the BRTC counter at Kedar Ganj Bazar in Mujibnagar, said Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Mujibnagar Police Station.
Acting on a tip-off, police detained and brought them into the custody, the OC said, adding that members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) from the Mujibnagar camp later reached the scene, the OC added.
Among those detained are nine children, five women, and five men of various ages.
According to their statements, the group had entered India illegally at different times in search of work and had been living in the Indian state of Haryana.
About six to seven days ago, they were detained by Indian authorities from various locations in Haryana and subsequently jailed in Berhampore, located in West Bengal's Murshidabad district.
They were later pushed back across the border during the early hours today, the OC said.
"Legal action will be taken following interrogation," he added.
