A Bangladeshi man was injured by gunfire from India's Border Security Force (BSF) in the Chinakandi border area of Sunamganj's Bishwambarpur upazila early today.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), citing local sources, said that the man suffered injuries after crossing into Indian territory and later returned to Bangladesh, received treatment, and went into hiding.

The injured was identified as Md Shamsu Mia, 25, of Rajapara village in Bishwambarpur upazila.

In a press release, BGB said that around 3:45am, Shamsu and four others illegally entered around 150 yards into Indian territory near the Chinakandi BOP to smuggle goods.

As a curfew was reportedly in effect in the bordering Indian areas, members of the BSF's Rajapara camp confronted the group and opened fire to disperse them.

Being injured on the left shoulder, Shamsu and others managed to flee back into Bangladesh. Shamsu received initial treatment locally before being admitted to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital, from which he was later discharged after his condition improved, the BGB press release read.

The process of taking legal action against those who entered India illegally to smuggle goods is underway, said the press release.

Lt Col AKM Zakaria Kadir, commanding officer of BGB's Sunamganj Battalion, told that, "Legal action is underway and border security has been reinforced."
