In a tragic incident in Garabaria village of Gangni upazila in Meherpur, a drug-addicted son-in-law fatally stabbed his uncle-in-law on Thursday (May 8) morning. The deceased, Ilyas Hossain (45), was a resident of the School Para area in Garabaria and the son of the late Nekkar Ali.
According to local sources, the assailant, Sabuj, is the son of former UP member Moynal Member from the same upazila's Solotaka village. On the morning of the incident, Sabuj went to Ilyas Hossain's house following a family dispute. During an argument, he took a sharp knife from his waist and stabbed Ilyas, killing him on the spot.
The victim's nephew, Abdullah, said that Sabuj had been addicted to drugs for a long time and used to abuse his sister for money. Three days ago, he drove her out of the house. Sabuj came to their home the night before the incident. During a heated exchange in the morning, he suddenly stabbed Ilyas. "When I tried to intervene, he attacked me as well. I demand the death penalty for this murderer," Abdullah added.
Locals caught Sabuj immediately after the incident. Upon receiving the news, members of the army, Gangni police, and local police camp swiftly arrived at the scene, brought the situation under control, and handed Sabuj over to the police.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gangni Police Station, Bani Israel, stated that law enforcement reached the scene promptly after receiving the report. The assailant was arrested, and the victim's body was sent to Meherpur General Hospital morgue. Legal proceedings are underway.
