A local leader of Jatiotabadi Sramik Dal was allegedly beaten to death over a longstanding land dispute in Tangail's Mirzapur upazila on Sunday.
The incident happened in the morning at Banshinagar under Mirzapur upazila.
The victim, Fazlul Haque, 50, was a resident of Banshinagar village and recently appointed as the president of Jatiotabadi Sramik Dal's Bashhtail union unit under Mirzapur upazila. His wife, Mariam Begum, and son, Monir Hossain, were also injured during the attack.
According to police and locals, Fazlul Haque had been engaged in a dispute with his nephew Parvez over ownership of a piece of land for several years. On Sunday morning, Parvez along with at least 25 others reportedly tried to forcibly occupy the disputed land. When Fazlul Haque and his family resisted, the attackers allegedly beat them mercilessly, leaving them seriously injured.
Locals rushed the injured to Kumudini Hospital in Mirzapur where doctors declared Fazlul Haque dead.
Abul Kalam Azad, General Secretary of the Bashhtail Union BNP, stated that Fazlul Haque was supposed to formally assume his new role as Sramik Dal president on the same day he was killed. He also claimed that several village arbitrations had taken place over the land earlier. “But this morning, Parvez, along with Anwar, Jinnah and 25-30 others, suddenly launched a brutal attack on Fazlul and his family,” he said.
Mirzapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mosharraf Hossain confirmed that a murder case is being filed and a police operation is underway to arrest the accused.
