Mostafizur Rahman Mostak, former mayor of Joypurhat municipality and joint general secretary of the district Awami League, was arrested in a case filed under the Explosives Act.
Dinajpur's detective branch and local police arrested Mostafizur, 48, during a joint drive last night near the main gate of Joypurhat 250-bed General Hospital, said Nur Alam Siddique, officer-in-charge (OC) of Joypurhat Police Station.
The case was filed by Shafi Sarker, an HSC examinee at Joypurhat Shaheed Zia College, on September 14 last year with Joypurhat Police Station.
According to the case statement, on August 4 last year, a protest march demanding the resignation of the Awami League government was underway in Joypurhat. As demonstrators reached the premises of Joypurhat Central Mosque, crude bombs were exploded.
Local Awami League leaders and activists allegedly attacked the protesters. Amid the chaos, some individuals allegedly snatched a firearm from police and opened fire, injuring Shafi.
Shafi suffered a gunshot wound above the eye and was treated at Joypurhat 250-bed General Hospital before filing a case against those responsible.
Mostafizur was previously arrested on December 31 last year from the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport area in Dhaka and sent to Joypurhat District Jail.
After 82 days in custody, he was released from the jail on bail.
