A fire broke out in the Kalamteji Forest Patrol Outpost area of the Sundarbans in Bagerhat this morning.
According to locals and forest officials, smoke was first spotted in the Teparbil area in the morning.
According to locals and forest officials, the lack of a nearby water source was hindering the containment efforts. To prevent further spread, forest guards have started cutting fire lines around the affected area.
Four Fire Service and Civil Defence units have been dispatched.
Abtad-e-Alam, station officer of Sharankhola Fire Station, said, "Teams from Sharankhola and Morrelganj have arrived, while two more from Rampal and Kachua are on their way."
"The fire is burning deep inside the forest, about two to two-and-a-half kilometres from the nearest canal. We will bring in water pumps by boat once the tide rises," said Bipuleshwar Das, an official of Dhansagar Station.
Kazi Mohammad Nurul Karim, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of the Eastern Sundarbans Forest Division, said, "We are on our way to the site and will assess the fire's extent and severity upon arrival."
