A Union Parishad (UP) member was hacked to death by miscreants in Khulna's Phultala upazila yesterday.
The deceased, Faruk Molla, 48, from Poigram village of Phultala upazila, was a member of Ward 4 under Phultala Sadar Union.
Phultala Police Station's Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Moniruzzaman Khan confirmed the incident.
According to police and locals, armed miscreants attacked Faruk Molla around 12:30pm at Bejerdanga's Madhyodanga village.
They brutally beat and hacked Faruk and also severed tendons of his legs before leaving the scene.
Later, locals rescued him and admitted him to Phultala Upazila Health Complex. Later, he was transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital where doctors referred him to a Dhaka hospital for advanced treatment. On his way to Dhaka by an ambulance, his condition deteriorated and he was rushed to Gopalganj's Kashiani Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead around 11:30pm.
Local sources said that Faruk was a member of a leftist group and a listed criminal with multiple cases filed against him in Phultala and other police stations.
OC Moniruzzaman Khan told that, "After getting information that UP member Faruk Molla was hacked by the assailants, we immediately rescued him and took him to the health complex. Later, he was transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital. However, he passed away on the way to Dhaka."
The OC further said that no case or complaint has been filed by the victim's family yet. Law enforcement is conducting raids in various locations to apprehend those involved, but no arrests have been made so far.
