An activist of the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) was shot dead in Khamarpara of Rangamati Sadar upazila this morning.

The deceased has been identified as Nirmal Khisa alias Tareng of Toijengma village in Naniarchar upazila, said Shahed Uddin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Rangamati Kotwali Police Station.

Quoting locals, the police said a group of unidentified assailants opened fire on Nirmal around 9:00am in the Toimidung area of Khamarpara. He was killed on the spot.

The UPDF has accused the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS) of carrying out the attack.

"Our unarmed activist Nirmal Khisa was engaged in his regular organisational activities in Khamarpara when 8-10 armed terrorists of the Jana Samhati Samiti (Santu) group, who were already in the area, opened indiscriminate fire and killed him," said UPDF's Rangamati district organiser, Sachal Chakma.

He condemned the killing and expressed outrage over the incident.

However, PCJSS Rangamati District Committee General Secretary Nagendra Chakma denied the allegation.

"I am not even in Rangamati town, so I am unaware of the incident. However, there is no question of JSS being involved, as we have no presence or activities in Khamarpara," he said.

The body has been recovered and sent to Rangamati General Hospital for an autopsy, the OC said, adding that no formal complaint has been filed regarding the murder.
