Jamaat-e-Islami leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman today called for the swift trial for the murder and rape of an 8-year-old girl in Magura, demanding that the entire process be completed within 90 days.
"We want to see the trial concluded, the verdict delivered, and its implementation within 90 days. It should not even get to the 91st day," he said while visiting the grave of the child and meeting her family.
Speaking as chief guest at a prayer gathering at Sonaikundi Government Primary School, he condemned the crime, calling it a disgrace to the nation.
"This heinous act has left a stain on Bangladesh. In the past, many mothers and sisters have suffered at the hands of such predators," he said.
Criticising what he described as a culture of impunity, he added, "When people demand justice, they are arrested, but true justice remains elusive. This lack of accountability only encourages repeated crimes."
The Jamaat chief also questioned the enforcement of capital punishment for rape and murder, saying, "The maximum punishment for these crimes is death. But how many executions have we actually witnessed so far?"
Advocating for the implementation of Islamic law, he argued that it would ensure absolute justice.
"If the laws of the Quran are enforced, justice will be served without oppression, and no criminal will escape punishment," he said.
He further said that they are not only demanding a swift trial but also the execution of the verdict.
