Prime Minister Tarique Rahman conducted surprise inspections at 13 locations across the capital on Saturday, including hospitals, educational institutions, government residential areas and a hawker-free footpath, expressing dissatisfaction over poor cleanliness and mismanagement and setting deadlines for corrective measures.

The prime minister carried out the inspections over approximately four and a half hours, from 9:10am to 1:41pm, personally assessing cleanliness, the environment, the quality of public services and management at various locations.

Hassan Shiplu, deputy press secretary to the prime minister, disclosed the details.

Doctor suspended after smoking in office

During the visit, the prime minister inspected Bangladesh Shishu Hospital and Institute in Agargaon, where he reportedly found Associate Professor Dr Rafiqul Islam smoking inside his office. The room was also found to be unclean.

The prime minister immediately instructed the hospital's chairman to take action against the physician. Dr Rafiqul Islam was subsequently suspended temporarily.

The prime minister also directed the hospital authorities to take the necessary steps within a specified timeframe to ensure cleanliness throughout the facility.

Earlier, he gave the authorities concerned seven days to improve the environment and cleanliness at Kuwait-Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital in Uttara.

He also set a two-week deadline for cleaning and improving the surroundings of the government officers' and employees' residential quarters in Azimpur.

According to Hassan Shiplu, the prime minister expressed dissatisfaction with the unhygienic conditions and management shortcomings observed during the inspections. He stressed the need for prompt action to improve public services and maintain cleanliness at the institutions.

Hospitals, educational institutions and residential areas inspected

The prime minister began his day's programme at 9:10am with a visit to Kuwait-Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital in Uttara. He then inspected Rajuk Uttara Model College.

He subsequently visited Mirpur Cantonment Public School and College, National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh, Paikpara Staff Quarters and Government Bangla College.

Later, he inspected Bangladesh Shishu Hospital and Institute and Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital in Agargaon, reviewing their environments, cleanliness and overall management.

The prime minister then visited Dhaka Residential Model College, his former educational institution, where he addressed students. He urged them to help build a cleaner Bangladesh and plant more trees.

He later visited Dhanmondi Government Boys' High School, Kalabagan Staff Quarters and the government officers' and employees' residential quarters in Azimpur.

 Inspects hawker-free footpath in Mirpur

As part of the inspection programme, the prime minister also visited a hawker-free footpath in Mirpur-10. Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton was present during the visit.

The inspection focused on keeping footpaths accessible to pedestrians and ensuring safe and unobstructed movement for city residents.

During the visits, the prime minister spoke with officials, students and members of the public. He also sought information from the authorities concerned about the quality of public services, cleanliness and overall management at the locations, according to Deputy Press Secretary Hassan Shiplu.
