Urges expatriates to abide by laws of host countries; Dhaka seeks details from Riyadh
Collected PhotoState Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed has described the executions of two Bangladeshis in Saudi Arabia as a lesson, urging Bangladeshi nationals living abroad to abide by the laws of their host countries.
She made the remarks while speaking to journalists at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday afternoon, October 17.
Obaed said the Bangladesh government had yet to receive official information from Saudi authorities regarding the cases. The government, however, had written to the Saudi authorities seeking details about the two Bangladeshis and the circumstances surrounding their executions.
“From our past experience, Saudi Arabia has its own legal framework. If someone commits a serious offence, the accused are punished under that legal system,” she said.
According to the state minister, the labour wing of the Bangladesh mission in Saudi Arabia had conveyed that the two Bangladeshis were allegedly involved in an immoral act inside a mosque in Makkah, which Saudi authorities considered a serious offence.
She said the Saudi court had taken action under the country's legal framework, but Bangladesh had yet to receive official information about the cases.
Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Interior announced that the two Bangladeshis had been sentenced to death following their conviction and that the sentences had been carried out in the Makkah region on October 14, according to reports by Saudi state media.
The Bangladesh government has sought further information from the Saudi authorities to verify the details of the cases, the state minister added.
