The fire that broke out at the factory of Drug International Limited in the Cherag Ali area of Tongi, Gazipur, has been brought under control, according to the Fire Service and Civil Defence.

Fire Service Director General Brigadier General Sultanul Afreen Junaid confirmed the development at a press briefing at the scene at 2:10pm on Wednesday (14 October).

He said the blaze was brought under control at 1:35pm after 21 firefighting units worked to contain it.

“The fire broke out on the second and fourth floors of the seven-storey building. As emergency medicines, including injectable drugs, caught fire, the resulting smoke caused breathing difficulties,” he said.

“We launched an emergency firefighting operation on the instructions of the Prime Minister. After relentless efforts by our 21 units, the fire was brought under control at 1:35pm,” the director general added.

No casualties were reported in the fire. However, one firefighter suffered breathing difficulties and was provided with medical treatment.

The fire broke out at around 10:00am on the fourth floor of the seven-storey Unit-2 building of Drug International Limited on Squibb Road in the Tongi industrial area.

Factory authorities initially tried to extinguish the blaze using their own firefighting system. As the fire intensified and went out of control, they informed the Fire Service.

Firefighting units from Tongi, Savar, Gazipur, Ashulia and Dhaka joined the operation. Personnel from the Bangladesh Army and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), as well as police and Gazipur City Corporation, also assisted in bringing the situation under control.

The blaze severely disrupted public transport and normal activities within an approximately two-kilometre radius of the factory.

The fire was finally brought under control at 1:35pm.
