First phase of UP elections on 12 Nov, second phase on 13 Dec

The first phase of union parishad elections is to begin on 12 November, with voting in 80 upazilas, while the second phase could take place on 13 December, Election Commissioner Brigadier General (retd) Abul Fazal Mohammad Sanaullah said today (14 September).

The Election Commission (EC) plans to hold elections to the country's 4,580 union parishads in seven phases.

According to the EC's preliminary plan, the third phase could be held on 30 December, followed by the fourth on 17 January, the fifth on 4 February, the sixth on 22 April and the seventh on 27 May.

"However, these are still preliminary decisions," Sanaullah said.

He made the remarks while briefing reporters after an EC meeting today.

Sanaullah said the commission had held a preparatory meeting on the union parishad elections and may begin the local government election process with 80 upazilas in the first phase.

The election commissioner also said the commission would hold discussions with all registered political parties on the local government elections.
