
Newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir paid tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War by laying a wreath at the National Memorial in Savar on Saturday.
The president placed the wreath at around 10:30am and stood in solemn silence to honour the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for the country’s independence.
A combined contingent of the army, navy and air force presented him with a guard of honour, while a solemn tune was played on the bugle.
Following the ceremony, the president signed the visitors’ book at the memorial premises.
On Thursday, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected President by the votes of the members of the National Parliament.
He was the BNP's nominated candidate in the presidential election. After being elected President, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was formally sworn in as President at Bangabhaban on Friday.
