
BNP’s former Secretary General and former minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has taken oath as the 23rd President of the country.
On Friday (August 21) at around 7:30 pm, the oath-taking ceremony was held at the Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban. Acting Speaker of the National Parliament Kaiser Kamal administered the oath to the newly elected President.
On Thursday, a presidential election was held at the Parliament House conference room. In the election, BNP’s candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected after receiving 255 votes. Meanwhile, the candidate of the 11-party alliance, Colonel (Retd.) Oli Ahmed, received 88 votes.
It is worth mentioning that on July 24, Mohammad Sahabuddin, who was elected as President during the Awami League government, resigned from the presidential post.
After his resignation, according to the Constitution, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed took charge of the duties of the President.
