Heavy rain since dawn causes waterlogging, misery in Dhaka

Heavy rainfall disrupted normal life across the capital on Sunday as waterlogging inundated several low-lying areas, causing severe inconvenience to commuters, students and pedestrians.

Rain, which began at around 5:00am, continued intermittently throughout the morning. Residents of Dhaka woke to the sound of persistent downpours, while many roads quickly became submerged.

Waterlogging was reported in several parts of the city, including Mirpur, Motijheel and Naya Paltan. In some areas, roads were flooded up to knee level, while elsewhere water reached waist height, making movement difficult for pedestrians and disrupting vehicular traffic.

The rain comes amid widespread wet weather that has affected various parts of the country over the past several days, triggering flash floods in some regions.

The situation has been particularly severe in the Chattogram Division, where heavy rainfall, hill runoff and landslides have claimed at least 43 lives over the past six days.

During the same period, flooding affected nearly 867,000 people, while around 242 kilometres of roads across the region went underwater due to continuous rainfall.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions over the next 24 hours, raising concerns over further flooding and waterlogging in vulnerable areas.
