Former Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni fell ill in jail and was rushed to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for treatment on Monday (June 29). She was admitted to the hospital at around 6:00 am.
Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Md Fazlu, who escorted her to the hospital, said that Dipu Moni suddenly fell ill at Munshiganj jail in the morning. Following instructions from the jail authorities, she was immediately taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. She is currently receiving treatment at the Medicine Department in the hospital's new building.
Dipu Moni is a Joint General Secretary of the Bangladesh Awami League, whose activities remain banned. Before the party's activities were banned, she served as Foreign Minister and later as Education Minister in the Awami League-led government.
Following the student-led mass uprising, Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and left the country on August 5, 2024. Subsequently, many leaders of the Awami League and its associate and affiliated organisations went into hiding. Among them were former ministers, government officials, and individuals who had held key positions in the state. Many have since been arrested and are currently in jail.
