Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday made a surprise visit to the Bangladesh Space Research and Remote Sensing Organisation (SPARRSO), directing the agency to transform itself into a modern, self-reliant institution capable of contributing to national security and development.
The prime minister arrived at the SPARRSO headquarters in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Agargaon, at about 9:15 am, according to deputy press secretary-1 Zahidul Islam Rony.
During the visit, Tarique inspected the offices of the Ministry of Defence-run space research agency and interacted with its officials and employees.
SPARRSO chairman Md Rashidul Islam briefed the prime minister on the organisation's activities, while officials from different divisions presented their ongoing research, innovations and development programmes.
The prime minister instructed the authorities concerned to modernise the organisation and strengthen its capacity in space research, satellite technology and remote sensing to better serve the country's development and national security needs.
Prime minister's defence adviser Brig Gen (retd) Dr AKM Shamsul Islam, defence secretary Md Ashraf Uddin, additional press secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon, private secretary-2 Md Mehedul Islam, deputy press secretary-1 Zahidul Islam Rony and senior officials of the Ministry of Defence and SPARRSO were present.
SPARRSO is Bangladesh's national agency responsible for the research, development and application of space science, satellite technology and remote sensing.
