A Dhaka court today sent actor Niamot Ullah Bhuiyan, popularly known as Zaher Alvi, to jail after denying his bail in a case over the death of his wife, Afra Ivnath Khan Ikra, in Dhaka’s Mirpur DOHS.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin passed the order after Alvi surrendered before the court and sought, said a court staffer.
On March 1, Ikra's father Kabir Hayat Khan filed the case with Pallabi Police Station against Alvi, 35, and his mother Nasrin Sultana Shyuli, 55, bringing allegations of abetment of suicide.
According to the case statement, family disputes and different forms of abuse had driven Ikra to take her own life.
Family members found social media influencer Ikra, 33, hanging at the couple's Mirpur DOHS flat on February 28 and rushed her to Kurmitola General Hospital, where she was declared dead.
On June 4, Nasrin Sultana surrendered before the court and secured bail in the case.
Alvi was abroad when his wife died. His lawyers later moved the High Court seeking protection from arrest or harassment upon his return to Bangladesh.
The court ruled in his favour, and Alvi returned home on June 5 following the order.
