State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam has said that local government elections are expected to be held within a short period, with decisions on the election schedule likely to be made after budgetary allocations are approved.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday (2 June) after inspecting Gulshan, Banani and Hatirjheel lakes in the capital, the minister said the government would determine from July or August which elections would be held and when.

He noted that the absence of elected representatives in the two city corporations had disrupted civic operations.

However, he said the appointment of administrators have helped improve the pace of work to some extent.

The state minister also highlighted recent disciplinary measures taken against city corporation officials. He said Executive Engineer Golam Kibria of Dhaka South City Corporation had been suspended on Monday over allegations of negligence in duty and would face departmental action.

According to the state minister, two regional officials from the two city corporations had also been suspended earlier as part of efforts to ensure accountability and improve service delivery.
