Five people were killed and at least 20 others were injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a motorcycle in Gopalganj on Thursday.
The accident took place around noon on the Dhaka–Khulna highway in the Bedgram area on the outskirts of the town.
Witnesses said that a Dhola Paribahan bus, travelling from Dhaka to Pirojpur, collided head-on with a speeding motorcycle travelling in the opposite direction after reaching Bedgram. The impact caused the bus to overturn on the road, while the motorcycle was completely mangled.
Four people, including two motorcycle riders, died on the spot.
Later, a 12-year-old child succumbed to injuries at Gopalganj Medical College Hospital, raising the death toll to five. Police have not yet been able to identify the victims. Among the deceased are a pregnant woman, a child, and three men.
Fire service and police, with the help of locals, rescued the injured and took them to Gopalganj Medical College Hospital and the General Hospital.
Following the incident, Gopalganj-2 MP Dr KM Babar, Deputy Commissioner Arif Uz Zaman, and Superintendent of Police Habibullah visited the accident site.
