At least five people were killed and two children injured after a private car crashed into the rear of a stationary truck on the Dhaka–Mawa–Bhanga Expressway in Bhanga upazila of Faridpur.
The accident occurred around 4am on Tuesday in the Maligram area of the expressway.
The deceased were identified as Nurjahan, 50, wife of Shahidul Islam from Jessore; her son Arif Islam, 24; Ayesha Begum, 28, wife of Ilias Hossain from the same village; Rakib, 18; and the unidentified driver of the private car.
The injured are Ashraful Hossain, 7, and Tashfia, 3, both passengers of the vehicle.
According to Shibchar Highway Police, the private car was travelling from Dhaka to Jessore when it collided with a gas-laden truck parked beside the road near Maligram bus stand. The impact killed four people on the spot. One more victim, Rakib, later died at Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
Officer-in-Charge of Shibchar Highway Police Station, Mizanur Rahman, said police and Bhanga Fire Service personnel conducted rescue operations after receiving the news. Efforts are underway to identify the driver. The injured have been admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital. Both vehicles involved in the crash have been seized.
Bhanga Fire Service Station Manager Abu Zafar said firefighters rushed to the scene and began rescue operations immediately. The driver was trapped inside the mangled vehicle and was later recovered after cutting through the wreckage.
