The hanging body of a female student of Dhaka University was found in her room at her parents' house in Badda, Dhaka, on Sunday morning.
Munira Mahjabin Mimo was a theatre activist and a student of the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies at the university.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Assistant Commissioner (Badda zone) Asaduzzaman told the media that the body was found hanging from a ceiling fan.
He said Mimo usually slept with the door open, but at dawn, family members found the door closed and knocked repeatedly. “Getting no response, they broke open the door and found her hanging.”
Being informed, police rushed to the spot and sent the body to Dhaka Medical College morgue for an autopsy, he said.
Meanwhile, police have detained Sudip Chakroborthy, an associate professor of the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies at DU, in connection with the death.
Assistant Commissioner Asaduzzaman said Mimo spoke with Sudip Chakroborthy over the phone for six minutes around 1am on Sunday.
“Sudip deleted the call history. We are initially suspecting his involvement in the incident, so he has been detained,” he said.
Mimo’s family filed a case with Badda police station on allegations of abetment to suicide.
Kazi Tamanna Haque, chairperson of the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies, expressed condolences over the death of Mimo.
