Chattogram port keeps national economy afloat for 139 years

Chattogram Port, the country's principal maritime gateway and lifeline of national trade, is set to observe Chattogram Port Day on April 25, marking the 139th anniversary in 2026 since the enactment of the Port Commissioners Act in 1888.

Over the decades, the port has grown from a modest river-based facility on the Karnaphuli to Bangladesh's busiest seaport, currently handling more than 90 percent of the country's import and export trade. It remains the backbone of the export-oriented ready-made garment industry while also ensuring the steady flow of fuel, raw materials and essential commodities.

Officials and stakeholders say the port has played a defining role in sustaining economic stability through periods of political transition, global market volatility and natural disasters.

During the Liberation War in 1971, port operations were severely disrupted as navigation channels were blocked with sunken vessels and mines. In the post-independence years, major rehabilitation efforts restored functionality, laying the foundation for modern maritime trade. The port also withstood repeated natural shocks, including the devastating cyclone of 1991, when infrastructure was severely damaged but operations were gradually restored.

In recent years, however, the port has faced growing operational pressure due to rising trade volumes. Container congestion, vessel waiting time and logistical bottlenecks have been persistent challenges affecting efficiency and cost of doing business.

To address these issues, authorities have undertaken a series of modernization initiatives, including the installation of high-capacity gantry cranes, expansion of terminal facilities and gradual digitalisation of port operations. These reforms aim to improve turnaround time and enhance overall cargo handling capacity.

Following the political transition in 2024 and subsequent economic pressures, port operations were maintained on a 24-hour basis to ensure uninterrupted supply of industrial raw materials and essential goods. Officials say this continuity helped stabilise supply chains and maintain market confidence during a critical period.

Strategically, the port is also being positioned as an emerging regional logistics hub due to its geographic location along key maritime routes. The development of transit and transshipment arrangements with neighbouring countries is expected to further strengthen its role in South and Southeast Asian trade connectivity.

To mark the 139th Chattogram Port Day (2026), a day-long programme featuring rallies, seminars and cultural activities has been organised. The observance will bring together port officials, workers and stakeholders, highlighting the port's contribution to the national economy and its future development trajectory.
