Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said the BNP signed the July Charter in the spirit of national unity and that the government is committed to implementing every provision of the document.
He made the remarks at a program held at the Darbar Hall of Dhaka Cantonment on Sunday morning.
The prime minister said the previous Awami League government had attempted to bring the army into controversy in various ways.
He added that the armed forces do not belong to any individual, party or group, and their sole responsibility is to safeguard the country’s independence and sovereignty.
He said the army was weakened through the Pilkhana massacre.
However, he said the armed forces had played a “glorious role” after August 5, 2024, during the interim government period and ahead of the 13th national election, fulfilling their duties with dedication.
The prime minister also said the government aims to implement reforms across all sectors, including the military, for the development of the country and its people.
She said the BNP signed the July Charter with the objective of restoring the state, adding that the government is determined to implement every clause of the charter “in full”.
“If the armed forces remain united, no one can ever defeat Bangladesh,” he said, adding that the spirit of patriotism inspired by martyred president Ziaur Rahman must be preserved within the military.
Tarique Rahman also praised the role of Bangladesh’s armed forces in UN peacekeeping missions.
He reiterated that the armed forces belong to the state alone and are tasked solely with protecting national independence and sovereignty.
Army Chief General Waker-uz-Zaman received the prime minister upon his arrival at the venue.
