Government employees are set to enjoy another extended holiday following the long break during Eid-ul-Fitr, as the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha is expected to bring a series of consecutive holidays.
According to the official government holiday calendar, a six-day holiday has been scheduled from 26 May (Tuesday) to 31 May (Sunday) to mark Eid-ul-Azha. Of these, 26 May and 31 May are expected to be declared public holidays through executive orders.
The holiday period could be extended further depending on administrative decisions. With regular weekly holidays falling on 22 and 23 May (Friday and Saturday), there is a possibility that Saturday may be declared a working day to align with the Eid holidays, effectively adding an extra day to the break.
Additionally, government employees may enjoy up to 10 consecutive holidays if they take optional leave on 24 and 25 May (Sunday and Monday). In that case, combining the weekly holidays on 22 and 23 May with the Eid holidays from 26 to 31 May would allow for an uninterrupted 10-day break from 22 May to 31 May.
Eid-ul-Azha, one of the most significant religious festivals for Muslims, is observed on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, commemorating the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim (AS).
As Bangladesh typically observes Islamic festivals a day after the Middle East, Eid-ul-Azha is expected to be celebrated in the country on 28 May, subject to the sighting of the moon.
