Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Abdus Salam on Friday announced that the city corporation will plant 300,000 trees over the next five years in areas under its jurisdiction.

He made the announcement while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of a tree plantation programme held at the University of Dhaka in the morning.

The programme was organised with the support of Srijoni Bangladesh.

“There is no alternative to tree plantation to save lives and protect the environment. Therefore, the Prime Minister’s nationwide tree plantation campaign must be transformed into a mass movement,” the DSCC Administrator said.

He said in line with the Prime Minister’s initiative, the DSCC has taken a plan to plant 300,000 trees during the 2026-2030 period, with an average of 60,000 trees every year.

To achieve the target, it has taken an initiative to establish a modern nursery under its own management. In addition, the city corporation will implement a ‘Zero Soil’ project under an agreement with the Forest Department, which will help cover road medians and traffic islands with grass and trees.

Highlighting the importance of public awareness, Abdus Salam said, “If citizens become aware, 50% of the city corporation’s work becomes easier. We will complete the remaining 50%. With collective efforts, the Prime Minister’s vision of a ‘Green City, Clean City’ can be achieved.”

DU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr ABM Obaidul Islam attended the programme as a special guest.

Besides inaugurating the tree plantation programme, the DSCC Administrator launched a free freelancing training programme for students at the event.
